Stitching Stories and Building Community

Art has always been a powerful vessel for storytelling, but it becomes even more profound when it serves as a bridge between cultures and a tool for wellbeing. Recently, Salford Community Upskilling hosted another session of “Whose Art, Whose Culture?”, bringing local residents together for a day of creativity, conversation, and connection.

Supported by Wellness Matters in Salford, the UK GovernmentGreater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA)Salford City Council, and Salford CVS, the session was a shining example of how community funding can translate into tangible moments of joy and learning.

Bana Bitendi: The Art of Traditional Doll Making

The centerpiece of the event was the ‘Bana Bitendi’ workshop—a session dedicated to traditional doll making. As seen in the photos from the day, the room was transformed into a bustling studio of color and texture.

Participants sat around communal tables, focused intently on stitching and shaping their creations. Using a beautiful array of fabrics—including vibrant African wax prints and repurposed textiles—the group brought unique characters to life. There is something deeply meditative about working with one’s hands.

More Than Just Sewing: Wellbeing and Connection

While the hands were busy sewing, the atmosphere was thick with camaraderie. The event was designed not just as an art class, but as a holistic wellbeing session.

The program included Storytelling Sessions and Wellbeing Talks, creating a safe space for dialogue. In a world that often feels disconnected, sitting face-to-face or side-by-side to craft is a powerful antidote to isolation.

A massive thank you goes out to the funders and supporters who made this possible:

  • UK Government
  • Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA)
  • Salford City Council
  • Salford CVS

Events like these are the heartbeat of Salford, proving that when we come together to create, we stitch the fabric of our community a little tighter.
