Breaking the Digital Divide: Internet Security at the Salford Digital Café

At our latest Salford Digital Café session, learners came together to build their confidence online. The session focused on internet security: the everyday habits that keep people safe, and the knowledge that helps them use the internet without fear.

The session was sponsored by Forever Manchester and Autotrader, whose support makes these free classes possible.

Practical skills for everyday life

Much of daily life now happens online. People manage appointments through apps, apply for jobs by email, keep in touch with family through messaging and use online banking. Each of those tasks asks us to trust a screen with something personal.

The session broke that down into practical steps, with learners practising how to set up and secure an email account. Across the programme, sessions also cover the habits that protect people online, including:

  • creating strong, memorable passwords and keeping them safe
  • spotting phishing messages, suspicious links and fake offers
  • using WhatsApp and other messaging apps with privacy in mind
  • protecting personal details when filling in online forms
  • asking for help when something does not feel right

The group was small, friendly and full of questions. People worked at their own pace, shared their own experiences and left with steps they could put into practice straight away.

Why internet security matters

For people who are new to the UK, or who are still building their English and digital skills, the risks online can feel abstract until something goes wrong. A scam message can look official. A password can be reused without a second thought. A form can ask for details that should never be shared.

Confidence is part of the solution. When someone understands why a code sent to their phone should stay private, or how to check whether a website is genuine, they are better able to protect themselves and their family. That confidence also opens the door to everything else digital skills make possible: learning, work, healthcare and staying close to the people they love.

A programme built around our community

The session is part of the Salford Digital Café, our free programme of group cybersecurity and wellbeing sessions. Each session is limited to 10 participants, so there is time for questions and one-to-one support. Light refreshments are provided, and people can book a place or simply drop in.

Sessions run on Saturdays, 11:30am to 1:30pm, at Suite 15, 1/F, St James’s House, Pendleton Way, Salford M6 5FW. Upcoming topics are:

  • Securing credentials and personal data — Saturday 7 November
  • Practical AI tips for everyday life — Saturday 21 November
  • Building a secure digital life — Saturday 5 December
