There is a saying that food is a universal language, and this week at Holm Court Community Room, we proved exactly that.
We were delighted to host another session of our English Learning Cafe, focusing on Interactive English. The concept is simple but powerful: moving language learning out of the textbook and into real life. Instead of just sitting in a classroom, we learn whilst doing.
More Than Just a Meal
This week’s theme was “Talk English whilst Cooking.” Under the guidance of the wonderful Noelle Yolande, a resilient and enthusiastic group of ladies gathered to prepare a classic comfort meal: Spaghetti Bolognese.
Using recipe sheets to practice reading comprehension and following instructions, the group worked together to chop onions, brown the mince, and season the sauce. The kitchen was filled not just with the delicious smells of basil and tomato, but with the sounds of new vocabulary being practiced, laughter shared, and friendships forming.

Wellbeing Through Community
While the goal was to improve English skills, the outcome was so much more. As the photos show, the atmosphere was one of joy and collaboration. Cooking together allows for natural conversation, helping to break down barriers and build confidence.
It was inspiring to see these ladies being resilient in their pursuit of happiness and fulfillment. Breaking bread together—or in this case, sharing bowls of pasta—is one of the best ways to boost wellbeing and combat isolation.
A Huge Thank You
This successful event wouldn’t have been possible without the support of our fantastic partners. A massive thank you goes to:
- Pendleton Together for generously providing the venue at Holm Court for our lessons.
- The Refugee Welcome Programme and Salford City Council for their continued support.
We look forward to many more sessions of walking, reading, and cooking together!
